We invite you to an engaging guided tour dedicated to the Jewish heritage of Bratislava, offering insight into lesser-known yet highly significant chapters of the city’s history. During the tour, you will explore the history of the Jewish community—from medieval settlement in the inner town, through life in the area below the castle, to the early modern period and the memory of the Holocaust. Together, we will discover the sites of former synagogues, a mikveh, and memorials, and see how Jewish presence has shaped Bratislava over the centuries.
The tour will take us to specific locations in the Old Town, where each stop reveals a chapter of Jewish history. You will learn about the medievalJewish quarters, the expulsion of Jews after 1526, the later resettlement on the castle hill and the Jewish ghetto, as well as religious life, education, the social and legal status of Jews, and the tragic events of the 20th century.
We will pass through the area of the medieval Jewish quarters and explore when, where, and under what circumstances everyday religious and communal life took place there. We will also recall the historic mikveh and explain its significance in Judaism.
Further stops will focus on the early modern Jewish community below the castle, established at the end of the 16th century. At the site of the former Orthodox synagogue, we will discuss the importance of Rabbi Chatam Sofer and the Orthodox tradition in Bratislava, and why his memorial has become one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Orthodox Jews. We will dedicate time to notable figures of Jewish Bratislava and explain the meaning of Stolpersteine.
The tour will conclude at the site where the Neolog synagogue once stood and at the Holocaust memorial. Here we will explore the origins and significance of the Neolog movement within Judaism before recalling the events of the Holocaust and their tragic impact on the Jewish community in Bratislava. We will discuss both the causes and consequences of the Holocaust, as well as the renewal of Jewish life in the decades that followed.

Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film is an autofictional, multi-layered tragicomedy in which the worlds of cinema and reality intertwine. It follows Elsa, an advertising and film director, who, following her mother’s death, throws herself into her work and gradually loses her bearings in her personal life. Following a health crisis, she travels with a friend to Lanzarote, where she attempts to escape her grief, yet at the same time unwittingly transforms it into creative material. At the same time, we also follow the screenwriter Raúl, whose film project in progress turns out to be a reflection and gradual ‘invention’ of Elsa’s story, thereby blurring the line between the author and his fiction. Here, Almodóvar explores his signature themes – memory, identity, female characters and the very act of creation – but elevates them to a meta-level concerning the ethics of storytelling and the use of personal experiences. The colourful, meticulously composed mise-en-scène contrasts with the characters’ intimate emotional uncertainty, creating a tension between external control and internal disintegration.

Whilst one island is burning, another is disappearing beneath the waves. A pair of short documentaries by Viera Čákanyová and Tomáš Krupa offer contrasting perspectives on the climate crisis – tourists who, amidst devastating fires, are undisturbed as they enjoy their holiday paradise (Greetings from Rhodes) and a man forced to say goodbye to the island that has been his family’s home for almost two hundred years (Rooted in Water). The films are linked by the question of how much longer we can continue to turn a blind eye to a world that is changing irrevocably.

for ignoring crises. Authentic quotes from holidaymakers and travel agency adverts complete the tragicomic picture and urge us to reflect – how far will we go to maintain the appearance of tranquillity?
Rooted in Water
On a disappearing island in Louisiana, a community faces flooding following reckless oil extraction. Can forced resettlement inland save people if it fails to address the cause of the ecological collapse? This observational documentary by established Slovak director Tomáš Krupa serves as a unique prelude to the feature-length film We Have to Survive, which is due to be released in cinemas in October 2026.
