Family-Friendly Bratislava: Things to Do with Kids

Start with the Old Town

Begin your day in the historic centre of Bratislava. Walk through the small streets and squares, look out for the city’s famous statues and stop at a café for a hot chocolate or babyccino. It is a simple way to give little travellers a break while you enjoy a coffee and take in the atmosphere of the Old Town.

From here, continue towards St. Martin’s Cathedral and then up to Bratislava Castle. The castle grounds are spacious and offer beautiful views over the Danube and the city. It is also a good place to slow down for a while before continuing your walk.

Time to run and play

After some sightseeing, children will probably be ready for a bit more space. Head to Janko Kráľ park, one of the oldest public parks in Europe. There is plenty of greenery, space to walk and relax, and it is a lovely place for a family picnic.

If you would rather stay on the other side of the river, Železná studienka offers even more nature. Its walking paths, playgrounds and open spaces make it a good choice when the family needs a break from the city.

Say hello to the animals

Children who love animals should not miss Bratislava Zoo. With hundreds of animals and plenty of space to walk around, it can easily fill several hours. Check the programme before your visit, as there are also special events and activities for children throughout the year.

A castle with a view

For a little more history, head to Devín Castle. The castle ruins sit high above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, with great views of the surrounding landscape. Children can walk around the ruins and viewpoints while parents get a little more history along the way.

When the weather is not on your side

Rainy afternoon? No problem. Bratislava has several places where children can have fun while staying indoors.

At the Aurelium Science Center, science becomes something you can touch and try for yourself. Gallery Multium takes you into a world of mirrors, lights and optical illusions, while Bibiana offers exhibitions and activities created especially for children.

For young transport fans, the Museum of Transport is another good stop, with historic cars, motorcycles, bicycles and trains.

Make sightseeing more fun

If little legs are getting tired, hop on a tourist train and see the city without having to walk everywhere. For something completely different, take the lift up to the UFO observation deck and look down at Bratislava.

The best thing about a family trip to Bratislava? You don’t have to fit everything into one day. Choose a few places your family will enjoy, leave time for a playground, ice cream or a spontaneous stop, and keep the rest for another day.
