Apponyi Palace

Historic Rococo Residence

Apponyi Palace was built between 1761 and 1762 by Count Juraj (György) Apponyi, transforming older Baroque houses into a refined Rococo residence. Its first floor served as a representative piano nobile, preserving original wooden wall coverings and painted decorations that evoke noble life in the late 18th century. The second floor functioned as private quarters, featuring simpler interiors and later adaptations over the centuries. The building became municipal property in 1867, when the city added its coat of arms above the entrance.

Museum of Viticulture & Historical Interiors

Today, the palace houses two key exhibitions of the Bratislava City Museum. The Museum of Viticulture occupies the ground floor and basement, documenting the city’s long winemaking tradition and showcasing historic vineyard tools and sparkling‑wine production. The upper floors present the Museum of Historical Interiors, displaying period furniture, décor, and reconstructed rooms that illustrate urban aristocratic life from the late 18th to the 19th century. Regular temporary exhibitions further explore Bratislava’s cultural and historical themes.
