Devin Castle stands above the meeting point of the Danube and Morava rivers, offering a historic riverside viewpoint where visitors can wander through atmospheric ruins and take in one of the region’s most scenic landscapes.
History Through the Centuries
The area of the castle shows evidence of settlement dating back to the 5th millennium BCE. During Roman times, it formed part of the frontier system known as the Limes Romanus. In the 9th century, it became an important centre of Great Moravia. Later, it served as a border fortress of the Kingdom of Hungary. The castle was destroyed in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars, leaving the ruins visible today.
Castle Grounds
The castle complex is divided into lower, middle, and upper sections. Visitors can walk among preserved walls, foundations, and archaeological remains. The site includes early Christian structures and Great Moravian buildings uncovered through long-term research. Several viewpoints offer wide views of the surrounding landscape.
Exhibitions
Devin Castle hosts exhibitions managed by the Bratislava City Museum. They present archaeological discoveries, historical artefacts, and the castle’s development from the 13th to the 20th century. More than 300 items are displayed across the permanent exhibitions.
