History of the museum

The history of the museum began in 1982 with the establishment of a documentation centre under the former Ministry of Trade of the Slovak Socialist Republic. The first permanent exhibition opened in 1990 in Klobušice, and in 1991 the institution became an independent Museum of Trade Bratislava.

Since 2005, the main exhibition has been located at Linzbothova Street in Bratislava. The museum also operates additional exhibitions, including the C.K. Merchant’s Shop in Český Krumlov (UNESCO site) and the Shop in the Museum on Biela Street in Bratislava.

Collections and exhibitions

The museum preserves an extensive collection of objects related to trade, retail, and everyday commercial life. Today, the collection contains more than 59,000 items, including artefacts, documents and historical materials.

The first acquired object was a wooden shop counter, which has become a symbolic piece of the museum’s collection.

The exhibition presents:

• the development of commerce in Slovakia
• historical shops and retail interiors
• cash registers, shelving systems and original equipment
• everyday life of merchants and customers
