History and ensembles

The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1949, guided from the outset by two internationally acclaimed conductors, Václav Talich and Ľudovít Rajter. Since then it has toured extensively across Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States, and performs regularly at major European festivals including the Prague Spring, Wiener Festwochen and the Berliner Festtage.

The Philharmonic consists of three artistic bodies. The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra performs the major works of the world orchestral repertoire. The Slovak Philharmonic Choir, rooted in a tradition going back to 1946, is considered one of the foremost professional choirs in Europe. The Slovak Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1960 by violinist Bohdan Warchal, has been one of Slovakia’s most beloved ensembles for over six decades.

What to expect

Concerts take place in the grand main hall of the Reduta, which is known for its exceptional acoustics and elegant neo-baroque interior. The season runs from autumn to spring and covers orchestral, chamber and choral programmes. The Philharmonic also organises the Bratislava Music Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music events in the region.

Getting there

Located right in the city centre, a few minutes walk from the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square. The Reduta building is also worth seeing from the outside even if you are not attending a concert.
