Freedom Square (Námestie slobody) is a spacious central plaza in Bratislava, known for its open layout, modernist surroundings, and the prominent Fountain of Union at its heart.
A Modernist Public Space
Freedom Square (Námestie slobody) is one of Bratislava’s largest open public areas, shaped by post‑war modernist planning and framed by major government buildings. Designed as a broad civic space, it serves as a venue for public gatherings, events, and everyday city life just outside the Old Town.
Restored Fountain of Union
At the center stands the Fountain of Union, fully restored with a new fountain system and brought back into operation in 2023. Water now flows again, visitors are allowed to step inside the fountain area, and the square has been refreshed with new lighting and more greenery, giving the space a livelier and more welcoming atmosphere.
