These details can help you avoid confusion when arriving in Bratislava for the first time.

  • Bratislava is compact: many arrival points are close to the Old Town, so walking is often the easiest option.
  • Vienna Airport is in Austria: it is commonly used for trips to Bratislava, usually with a direct bus connection.
  • Bratislava has more than one railway station: Main Station is closest to the Old Town, while Bratislava-Petržalka is useful for some trains from Austria.
  • Buses from Vienna can arrive at different stops: check whether your bus stops at Nivy Bus Station, Bratislava Main Station, Most SNP, Bratislava Airport or another stop.
  • City centre and Old Town are not always one stop name: look for exact stop names such as Hodžovo námestie, Kapucínska, Zochova, Kollárovo námestie, Most SNP, Šafárikovo námestie or Rajská.
  • There is no metro in Bratislava: public transport means trams, buses and trolleybuses.
  • Long-distance and city transport tickets are separate: train, coach or transfer tickets do not usually cover Bratislava public transport, unless stated otherwise.
  • Night transport is different: after around 11:30 PM, public transport switches to night routes with different lines and less frequent services.
