Bratislava Carnival / “Fašiangy”
- Festivals & Celebrations
Bratislava has decided to continue the traditions of carnival celebrations from the past when various craft guilds, associations, and groups organized masked parades, tournaments, and dance parties. Join the carnival parade through the streets of the city, a competition for the best mask, workshops, shows and a dance party.
Bratislava Carnival
The carnival season in Slovakia begins the day after Epiphany and lasts until Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. In cities, the celebrations traditionally took on a distinctive, urban character.
In the past, the festive atmosphere was created mainly by local guilds, associations, and craftspeople who organized masked parades, tournaments, and dance parties. Later, the carnival season in towns became closely linked with elegant balls and grand festivities.
The first edition of Bratislava Carnival took place in 2023, when the capital decided to revive this lively tradition and bring the joyful spirit of the season back to the city streets.
A colourful carnival parade, a contest for the best mask, live music, a cheerful programme for children and adults, food and drink stalls, and of course the irresistible Slovak doughnuts — šišky — all make Bratislava Carnival a celebration full of flavour, laughter, and local charm.
