Ancient Gerulata Rusovce

Just outside Bratislava, in the quiet district of Rusovce, lie the remains of one of the northernmost outposts of the Roman Empire. Ancient Gerulata is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the transnational "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes" inscription awarded in 2021, and one of the most historically significant sites in Slovakia.
History
The first Roman military unit was stationed at Gerulata around 70 AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. The fort developed over several centuries into an important military castellum on the Limes Romanus, the fortified border of the Roman Empire along the Danube. Around it grew a civilian settlement, burial grounds and the infrastructure of daily Roman life.
Complex conservation and restoration works began in 1975, and a modern exhibition hall housing Roman era artefacts opened in 1985. The restored remains of the original castellum structure were opened to the public in 1988.

What to expect
The site combines an outdoor archaeological area with an indoor museum. In the grounds you can walk among the preserved remains of a late Roman fortress from the 4th century, including the foundations of earlier building phases dating back to the 2nd century.
The museum exhibition brings the Roman world to life through finds from archaeological excavations, including Roman weapons, everyday pottery, jewellery, personal items, tombstones, coins and reliefs. The lapidarium contains stone monuments that tell the story of military and civilian life on the edge of the empire.
In spring the site is particularly atmospheric, planted with herbs and plants known from Roman times, including rosemary and olive trees.
