Astorka Korzo ’90 Theatre

History

In 1993, the theatre took on the name Astorka Korzo ’90, in honour of the former Astória café, which had stood at the theatre’s original location on Suchý mýto 17 from 1817 to 1945 and was one of the great centres of Bratislava’s cultural life in the early 20th century. Since 2002, the theatre has been based at Námestie SNP 33, in the building of the former Pohraničník cinema.

The theatre is closely linked to the legacy of the Theatre on Main Street, a tradition famous for pioneering dramaturgical and directorial work. Its early years were shaped by legends of Slovak theatre including Július Satinský, Marián Labuda and Zora Kolínska, and by a long-running collaboration with Milan Lasica, who played the title role in the theatre’s iconic production of Cyrano.

What to expect

Astorka’s programme focuses on modern world classics and ambitious contemporary work, performed by some of Slovakia’s finest actors. The ensemble includes established Slovak actors such as Boris Farkaš, Zita Furková, Marta Sládečková, Anna Šišková and Matej Landl, under the long-standing artistic leadership of director Juraj Nvota.

Productions take place both in the main hall at Námestie SNP 33 and at the Studio A2 at Mickiewiczova 2, which hosts smaller and more experimental work.

Getting there

Located on Námestie SNP, a 5-minute walk from the Main Square. Studio A2 is on Mickiewiczova Street, entrance through the courtyard.
