No building in Bratislava stops people in their tracks quite like this one. The Blue Church was commissioned in 1909 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of St Elisabeth, patron saint of Christian charity, and was designed by Ödön Lechner, a Budapest-based architect often referred to as the Hungarian Gaudí. It was consecrated on 11 October 1913. Everything, from the facade and roof tiles to the majolica ornaments and interior, is in shades of blue, making it one of the most distinctive buildings in Central Europe.

Architecture and history

The church exemplifies the Hungarian Secession style, the Austro-Hungarian interpretation of Art Nouveau. The facade features a mosaic above the main entrance depicting St Elisabeth, as well as glass and metal roses symbolic of her legend. The cylindrical tower rises to 36.8 metres. The nearby grammar school on Grösslingová Street was built in the same style by the same architect, completing the visual ensemble.

What to expect inside

Inside, the blue, white and gold palette mirrors the exterior. The altar houses a large painting of St Elisabeth and contains relics of the saint. The pews, walls and ceilings all continue the blue theme, making the interior as striking as the exterior.

Getting there

Located in a quieter corner of the Old Town, a 10-minute walk from the Main Square. Easy to combine with a stroll along Grösslingová Street.

In August, guided tours with organ music run every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
