Bratislava City Gallery – Mirbach Palace

History

The palace stands on a site mentioned in written records as far back as 1459. Its last private owner, Count Emil Mirbach, bequeathed the building to the city of Bratislava with the specific wish that it be used to establish a public gallery. That wish has shaped the palace’s identity ever since.

What to expect

From the moment you enter the courtyard, the palace makes an impression. An ornate fountain by sculptor Viktor Tilgner dominates the space, and the rococo detailing throughout the building is remarkably intact.

On two floors you will find both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The permanent collection focuses on Central European Baroque painting and sculpture, featuring works by artists who shaped the development of Baroque art across the region. Many of the pieces originally decorated local churches and monasteries.

The most remarkable feature of the palace is the graphics cabinet, two rooms whose walls are lined with 290 coloured engravings, etchings and mezzotints from the 17th and 18th centuries, set into original wooden panelling beneath rococo stucco ceilings. It is one of the most unusual interior spaces in Bratislava.

The ground floor also houses the Emil cafe, where you can stop for refreshments after your visit, and an Atelier space used for workshops and educational events.

Getting there

Located on Františkánske námestie, just a few minutes walk from the Main Square and directly adjacent to the Franciscan Church. Easy to combine with a visit to the Old Town Hall or Michael’s Gate.

Tips

• The courtyard and Atelier are free to enter and worth a look even on a tight schedule
• Wednesday evening opening until 20:00 is ideal for visitors with busy daytime plans
• The graphics cabinet is the standout highlight — allow time to look closely at the individual prints
