Historic Jewish Cemetery Remnant

The Chatam Sofer Memorial stands on the site of Bratislava’s 17th‑century Old Jewish Cemetery, once the main burial ground of the local Jewish community. Most of the cemetery was demolished in 1943 during the construction of a tunnel, but the section containing the graves of prominent rabbis — including Rabbi Moshe Schreiber, known as the Chatam Sofer — was preserved in a concrete shell. This protected underground compound remained a place of pilgrimage even during the Communist era, symbolizing the endurance of Jewish heritage in the city.

Redeveloped Memorial & Architectural Design

Between 2000 and 2002, the site was fully redeveloped, restoring gravestones and creating a modern memorial complex designed by architect Martin Kvasnica in accordance with Halakhic requirements. Visitors enter via a raised platform that allows access even for Kohanim, who are traditionally prohibited from entering cemeteries. The memorial is not a museum but a sacred site, attracting pilgrims and visitors who come to honor one of Europe’s most influential Orthodox rabbis and the preserved fragment of Bratislava’s Jewish past.
