A unique underground memorial preserving Bratislava’s Jewish heritage. The Chatam Sofer Memorial is one of the most significant Jewish heritage sites in Central Europe — a serene underground space preserving the historic cemetery of the great rabbi Chatam Sofer and the scholars of the former Pressburg Yeshiva.
A Sacred Place Preserved Beneath the City
The memorial protects the remains of part of the old Jewish cemetery that once stood on the outskirts of Pressburg (Bratislava). When the surrounding area was modernised in the 20th century, the cemetery was mostly destroyed, but the graves of Chatam Sofer and several revered rabbis were preserved.
Today, they are housed in a specially designed underground hall — a solemn, minimalist space built to respect Jewish burial traditions and ensure that the graves remain untouched.
Who Was Chatam Sofer?
Rabbi Moshe Schreiber, known as Chatam Sofer (1762–1839), was one of the most influential Jewish scholars of his time and the leader of the world-renowned Pressburg Yeshiva. His teachings shaped Orthodox Judaism across Europe and beyond.
The site attracts visitors, scholars and pilgrims from around the world.
