Founded in Prague in 1992, just months after the fall of communism, Gandy Gallery has spent over three decades giving visibility to artists whose voices were long suppressed. Since moving to Bratislava in 2005, it has become one of the most respected international contemporary art galleries in Central Europe, and one of the city's most quietly compelling places to visit.
About the gallery
The gallery was founded by Nadine Gandy, a French-born curator with a deep interest in the art of what she calls “New Europe.” Since relocating to Bratislava, she has focused on artists from former Soviet countries, whose work explores themes of identity, memory, the body, migration and transformation. In 2012, the French government recognised her contribution to cultural life by awarding her the title of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters.
The gallery currently represents around thirty artists from across Central, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and fosters long-term relationships built on research, experimentation and dialogue.
What to expect
Each exhibition is carefully curated around a specific artistic or social question. The space is intimate and the programme changes regularly, so no two visits are the same. If you are interested in contemporary art beyond the mainstream, this is one of the best stops in Bratislava.
