Grassalkovich Palace

History

The palace was designed by architect Andreas Mayerhoffer for Count Grassalkovich, one of the most powerful figures in the Hungarian Royal Chamber. It became a favourite venue for Habsburg high society events, and composers including Joseph Haydn performed here. After various periods of use and reconstruction, the palace became the presidential residence in 1996.

What to expect

The palace itself is closed to the public, but the adjacent garden can be visited for free. It regularly hosts outdoor concerts and offers a playground for children. The garden was originally laid out in the French formal style and remains a peaceful retreat from the city. It contains a statue of Empress Maria Theresa on horseback, the Fountain of Youth by sculptor Tibor Bártfay, and a series of contemporary artworks scattered throughout.

In front of the palace on Hodžovo Square stands a large globe-shaped fountain symbolising freedom. The changing of the guard takes place daily at 13:00 and is worth timing your visit around.

Getting there

A 10-minute walk from the Main Square, just beyond Michael’s Gate. The palace sits between the Old Town and the main train station, making it easy to combine with a walk along Štefánikova Street.

Tips

• Dogs and bicycles are not allowed in the garden, making it a calm space for families with children
• The garden is accessible from Štefánikova and Banská Bystrica Streets
• Visit at 13:00 to watch the changing of the guard ceremony in front of the palace
