House at the Good Shepherd Bratislava – museum of clocks

  • Museums

Tucked beneath Bratislava Castle on one of the oldest streets in the city, the House at the Good Shepherd is one of the finest Rococo buildings in Central Europe and one of Bratislava's most charming stops. Built in 1760 to 1765, the house is a small treasure of Central European burgher architecture, surviving in its original state from that period. Today it houses the city's Museum of Clocks across three floors of an elegantly narrow historic interior.

The building

The building represents an example of quality Rococo town architecture, its layout and design carefully adapted to the constraints of its location and space. The facade retains a trompe l’oeil window with painted flower pots and grills one of its most delightful original details. The statue of the Good Shepherd in the niche under the canopy is not original, but has become the building’s defining symbol.

What to expect

The exhibition covers clockmaking from the late 17th to the late 19th century and includes a unique set of mobile sundials from the 17th and 18th centuries, portable and wall clocks, alarm clocks and examples of wristwatches. Most of the exhibits are signed by Bratislava master clockmakers. The collection spans three floors and offers an intimate, unhurried experience.
