Ján Cikker Museum

Tucked into a quiet, leafy street in central Bratislava, the Ján Cikker Museum is one of the most intimate cultural stops in the city. It occupies the functionalist villa where Slovak composer Ján Cikker lived and worked from 1967 until his death in 1989, and preserves both his personal legacy and the atmosphere of the space he created.

Who was Ján Cikker?

Ján Cikker (1911–1989) was one of the most important composers in Slovak music history, known above all for his opera compositions and his role as a professor at the Academy of Music in Bratislava. He received numerous national and international awards, including the UNESCO Music Prize in 1979 and the title of National Artist. The Vienna University of Economics awarded him the G. von Herder Prize for humanism and high ethical principles in his work, and the prize money contributed to the purchase of this villa.

The building

The villa was designed in 1947 by architects Eugen Kramár and Štefan Lukačovič as a fine example of functionalist residential architecture. The contrast between the clean modernist exterior and the rich historical furniture inside is one of the most striking features of the space. The ground floor has been adapted into a small concert and lecture hall, with the composer’s grand piano remaining in place alongside baroque furniture and original artworks.

What to expect

The collection includes manuscripts of Cikker’s scores, personal correspondence, photographs, books, historical furniture, porcelain and works of art. The museum also hosts concerts, lectures and educational events, making it an active cultural space as well as a memorial.
