Architecture

The building is a striking example of Cubist architecture applied to a religious space. The exterior features a towerless seven-pillared colonnade facing the street. Inside, modern steel and concrete construction is combined with historicist elements: an arcade for the women’s gallery, a metal bimah and an ornate ark. The synagogue fulfils traditional Orthodox requirements including the separation of men and women and the central placement of the bimah, while incorporating the modern construction methods of its era.

What to expect

The Jewish Community Museum is installed on the upper floor of the synagogue. Its permanent exhibition, The Jews of Bratislava and Their Heritage, documents the history and culture of Bratislava’s Jewish community. The 2025 special exhibition focuses on architect Artur Szalatnai-Slatinský and his work.

Getting there

Located on Heydukova Street in the Old Town, a short walk from the Main Square and easy to combine with a visit to the nearby Museum of Jewish Culture.

Tips

• Modest dress is required. Men must cover their heads and must not wear shorts. Women should wear long skirts or trousers and long sleeves
• Opening hours are very limited — Friday and Sunday only, and only during the summer season. Plan your visit carefully
• The synagogue is an active place of worship; silence and respect are expected at all times
