On Štefánikova Street, a small boulevard lined with historic palaces, Kino Film Europe is one of Bratislava's most characterful cinemas. Red carpets, marble interiors and a 99-seat auditorium with a genuinely intimate atmosphere make it unlike any multiplex in the city. If you love European cinema, this is your place.
The building
The cinema is housed in the Pisztory Palace, an eclectic historic building with a layered past. The building once served as the residence of the Third Reich and later as a Lenin Museum during the communist era. Today, after a recent renovation that restored its beautiful facade, it is home to one of the most respected independent cinemas in Slovakia.
What to expect
The programme focuses on quality European and festival films, mostly distributed by Film Europe Media Company. Two screenings run daily at 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, though start times may vary depending on film length. The cinema regularly premieres films across Slovakia before wider release.
Three key annual events define the calendar: SCANDI in January, a showcase of contemporary Nordic cinema; Crème de la Crème in March, a French film week held in cooperation with the French Institute as part of the Month of Francophonie; and Be2Can in September and October, presenting the best films from the Berlinale, Venice and Cannes festivals.
Getting there
Located on Štefánikova Street in the Old Town, a 10-minute walk from the Main Square and close to the Presidential Palace.
