A central Old Town landmark since the 16th century, Maximilian’s Fountain—also known as Roland’s Fountain—stands as a symbol of Bratislava’s civic pride and historic square life.

Historic Origins

Commissioned by King Maximilian II in 1572, the fountain was built to supply the city with water and commemorate the king’s coronation. Over centuries, it became a focal point of the main square, witnessing markets, celebrations, and public gatherings that shaped the city’s identity.

Symbolic Sculpture

The central statue depicts a knight often referred to as Roland, a legendary protector of medieval towns. Although historically inaccurate, the name endured, and the figure became a beloved emblem of Bratislava. The fountain’s Renaissance design and stone reliefs highlight its artistic and cultural value.
