Located in the Old Town, Michael’s Gate is one of the most important historic landmarks in Bratislava and the only preserved gate from the city’s medieval fortifications. With more than 700 years of history, it is a symbol of the former fortified city and an important gateway into the historic centre.
Medieval City Gate
Michael’s Gate was built before Bratislava received city privileges in 1291. It once formed part of the defensive walls that protected the city.
Today, it is the last remaining gate of the original medieval fortifications.

Inside the Tower
After restoration, the tower now offers a museum-style exhibition focused on its history and architecture.
Visitors can discover:
- how the tower was built and changed over time
- medieval defensive structures of Bratislava
- historical elements such as the statue of St. Michael, bells and clocks
- Baroque roof reconstruction
The exhibition shows the tower itself as the main historical object.
Medieval surroundings
The gate is connected to the remains of the old city fortifications, including the former barbican area.
The surrounding streets still follow the layout of the medieval city and are part of Bratislava’s oldest urban zone.
Visitor tip
Michael’s Gate is located directly in the pedestrian Old Town, making it easy to include in any walking tour of Bratislava.
It is one of the most visited landmarks in the city and a key stop for anyone interested in history and architecture.
