Slovak National Museum – Museum of Carpathian German culture

The building

The museum is housed in the Sunyal Mansion on Žižkova Street, a building with a layered history stretching back to the medieval period. The original small one-room house was extended at the end of the 15th century by a covered gateway, and a courtyard wing was added in the 17th century. During the 18th century it was rebuilt in the Baroque style and housed the well-known inn “At the Golden Angel”. A further Empire-style reconstruction in the early 19th century added a second floor.

What to expect

The museum documents the centuries-long presence of Carpathian Germans in Slovakia, from their arrival as settlers in the Middle Ages through to the 20th century. The permanent exhibition covers everyday life, crafts, religion, language and traditions of this community, as well as the turbulent events of the 20th century that led to their displacement after World War II.

The museum also includes a documentation and information centre with a specialised library, making it one of the most complete research institutions on Carpathian German culture in Slovakia.

Getting there

Located on Žižkova Street in the Podhradie quarter, between the Nový most and Chatam Sófer public transport stops. From the stop, walk along the Danube embankment towards the Church of the Holy Trinity. A 10-minute walk from the Old Town centre.

Tips

• A single ticket gives access to all SNM museums on Žižkova Street, including the Museum of Hungarian Culture and the Archaeological Museum
• There is no barrier-free access to the exhibitions; wheelchair access is available on request at the SNM ticket desk
• The Podhradie neighbourhood around the museum is worth exploring on foot
