Slovak National Museum – Museum of Hungarian culture in Slovakia

  • Museums

Housed in the renovated Brämer Mansion on Žižkova Street, the Museum of Hungarian Culture in Slovakia is part of the Slovak National Museum network and the only institution in the country dedicated to the history and culture of the Hungarian community in Slovakia. The building itself is a quiet architectural gem, tucked into the partially preserved Podhradie quarter below Bratislava Castle.

The building

The Brämer Mansion dates from the second half of the 16th century and arose from the rebuilding of older Late Gothic houses into a single Renaissance four-wing floor plan. Around 1600 it was rebuilt into a two-storey Renaissance mansion by castle officer Brämer. The mansion forms part of the historic Podhradie neighbourhood, one of the oldest parts of Bratislava, with the Church of the Holy Trinity at its centre.

What to expect

The permanent exhibition covers the material and spiritual heritage of the Hungarian community in Slovakia, spanning historical, ethnographic, literary and art-historical traditions. The collection documents centuries of shared history between Slovak and Hungarian cultures in this part of Central Europe.

The museum also maintains branch exhibitions outside Bratislava, including the Imre Madách manor house in Dolná Strehová and the Kálmán Mikszáth memorial house in Sklabiná, both dedicated to major figures of Hungarian literature with deep ties to Slovakia.
