Museum of Pharmacy – Red Crayfish

  • Museums

Just steps from Michael's Gate on one of the most charming streets in Bratislava's Old Town, the Museum of Pharmacy at the Red Crayfish is one of those small but genuinely memorable stops that rewards the curious visitor. The museum is housed in a part of a former pharmacy called the Red Crayfish on the ground floor of a Baroque burgher's house, with much of its original interior preserved.

What to expect

The atmosphere of the room is enhanced by paintings in the Baroque-Classicist style with a theme of healing and three figurative compositions on the vaulted ceiling. The original Empire-style furnishings of the pharmacy office set the scene, and the rooms that follow document 400 years of pharmacy vessel development from wooden containers used to preserve dried plants and gemstones, through tin vessels for oils and resins, ceramic containers introduced in the 17th century, and the glass vessels that became a pharmacy staple for centuries.

The exhibition also includes examples of pharmacy furniture dating from the 17th to the 19th century, all from the collections of the Bratislava City Museum.
