The building

The gallery is situated on one of the oldest streets in Bratislava, built on the remnants of medieval city walls from the 13th to the 15th centuries. From the outside, the building still has the look of a classical 19th-century construction, but its modern extension, originally built for the Slovenská Sporiteľňa bank in the 1990s, earned its architects Viktória Cvengrošová and Virgil Droppa the prestigious Dušan Jurkovič Award for outstanding architecture in Slovakia. The building is a registered cultural monument and part of the historic centre of Bratislava. After reconstruction in 2012, the building offers barrier-free access to all premises.

What to expect

The permanent collection documents the history of painting and sculpture in Slovakia in the 20th century through works by artists such as L. Mednyánszky, L. Fulla, D. Skutezký, M. Galanda, M. Benka and M. Laluha, who fundamentally shaped the development of art in Slovakia. Around 160 paintings and sculptures are arranged chronologically and divided into thematic groups, highlighting key trends in Slovak fine art. Labels and descriptions are available in both Slovak and English.

The gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions on the ground floor alongside the permanent display. Your ticket includes a complimentary coffee or tea at the gallery café.

Getting there

Located on Nedbalova Street in the Old Town, a short walk from Hviezdoslavovo námestie and the Slovak National Theatre. Paid parking is available at Saba Garage Opera and Garage Centrum nearby. Public transport or walking is recommended.

• Guided tours in English are available, reservation required
• Photography for personal use is generally permitted; commercial use requires written approval from gallery management
