A historic Old Town palace showcasing centuries of architectural layers and key exhibitions of the Bratislava City Gallery.
Layers of History Beneath One Roof
Pálffy Palace on Panská Street is remarkable for the way it preserves multiple stages of Bratislava’s architectural past within a single building. Archaeological research uncovered traces of a Celtic settlement and mint from the 1st century, early medieval masonry, and the Gothic core of a 14th‑century palace with a chapel and star‑vaulted ceiling. Later periods added Romanesque, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements, reflecting the city’s evolving urban fabric. The Pálffy family acquired the building in the 18th century, using it for representative purposes and housing part of Count Ján Pálffy’s extensive art collection.

Bratislava City Gallery Exhibitions
Today, the palace serves as one of the main venues of the Bratislava City Gallery, offering permanent and temporary exhibitions across several floors and the basement. Visitors can explore Gothic panel paintings, early Renaissance works, and the celebrated Passage installation by Matej Krén, composed of thousands of books and mirrors, creating an illusion of infinite space. The BIATEC exhibition highlights the Celtic mint discovered on-site, combining archaeological findings with modern digital storytelling. The palace courtyard is freely accessible and provides a quiet retreat in the heart of the Old Town.
