Rudavsky’s Magic Garden

  • Parks & Gardens
  • Galleries

On the outskirts of Bratislava, hidden behind a garden gate in the quiet district of Podunajské Biskupice, lies one of the most unusual places in Slovakia. Rudavsky's Magic Garden is a unique artistic sanctuary where nature and more than 300 works of art, including sculptures, paintings, textiles and installations, exist side by side. It is the kind of place that is genuinely hard to describe and best experienced in person.

History

The garden was created in the 1960s by Andrej and Mária Rudavský, two of the most prominent figures in Slovak visual art of their generation. Despite the displeasure of the communist regime, the garden grew quietly and became a meeting place for legends of Slovak art, including members of the Galanda Group, as well as actors, directors, writers and musicians.

Today the garden continues to evolve through the work of their son Ondrej Rudavský, a world-renowned multimedia artist, and his wife Jacqueline, whose original jewellery is displayed in a newly expanded second-generation gallery at the rear of the garden.

What to expect

The garden is an open-air gallery unlike any other in Central Europe. Sculptures, objects and paintings are set among mature trees and plants, responding to the natural character of the space. Permanent exhibitions of works by Andrej, Mária, Ondrej and Jacqueline Rudavský are spread throughout the garden and can be explored freely during your visit.

The experience has been compared to world-famous artistic gardens such as Gaudi’s Park Güell in Barcelona, the Tarot Garden in Tuscany and Little Sparta in Scotland.
