Slovak National Museum – Archaeological Museum

  • Museums

Below Bratislava Castle, in a Renaissance mansion on Žižkova Street, lies one of Slovakia's most significant archaeology collections. The SNM Archaeological Museum covers human presence on Slovak territory from prehistoric times through to the High Middle Ages, and does so with a depth and breadth that makes it essential for anyone curious about what came before the city we see today.

History

The museum traces its roots to 1924, when the first specialist archaeological department was established at the Museum of Slovak National Geography and History in Bratislava. Over the decades it grew into an independent institution, becoming the SNM Archaeological Museum in 1989 and moving to its current building in 1991.

The building

The museum is housed in the Renaissance Kamper Mansion on Žižkova Street, one of the historic buildings that make up the partially preserved Podhradie quarter below Bratislava Castle. The surrounding neighbourhood is worth exploring on foot before or after your visit.

What to expect

The permanent exhibition takes visitors on a journey through thousands of years of human history on Slovak territory, from the earliest prehistoric settlements through the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Roman period and up to the early medieval Slavic settlements. The collections include many exceptional items obtained directly through the museum’s own archaeological fieldwork.

An audio guide is available in four languages, Slovak, English, German and Hungarian. A tactile line runs through the exhibition with texts in Braille, making it one of the more accessible museum experiences in Bratislava for visually impaired visitors.
