Slovak National Theatre – Historical Building

  • Other Places

A neo-Renaissance landmark currently waiting for reconstruction. The historical building of the Slovak National Theatre is one of Bratislava’s most elegant architectural icons — a jewel from the late 19th century that will soon again host opera, ballet and classical concerts in one of the city’s most atmospheric interiors.

A Neo-Renaissance Jewel on Hviezdoslav Square

Opened in 1886, the theatre was designed by the renowned Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer, who shaped dozens of European theatres of the era.
Its façade is richly decorated with sculptural details, including allegorical figures and the famous Ganymede Fountain in front of the building — one of the most photographed spots in central Bratislava.

Inside, there is an ornate auditorium with red velvet seating, gilded decoration and a ceiling fresco depicting Apollo and the muses.

💡 Fun fact: The theatre was the venue of the first-ever performance of Smetana’s opera The Kiss outside the Czech lands — just weeks after its premiere.
