Slovak Radio Building
- Technical Monuments
Few buildings in Bratislava stop people in their tracks the way this one does. The Slovak Radio Building an inverted pyramid of steel hovering above the street is one of the most daring pieces of architecture in Central Europe, and one of the city's most photographed landmarks. But it's not just a pretty (or polarising) exterior: step inside for a concert and you'll experience one of the finest acoustic spaces in the region.
What to Expect
The building is a working broadcaster and concert venue, not a museum which makes it all the more interesting. The centrepiece is a 523-seat concert hall, home to the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and a regular programme of classical, popular and organ concerts. The hall’s pride is one of the largest organs in Central Europe, with 6,300 pipes. Remarkably, the entire hall is mounted on springs to isolate it from outside vibration — the acoustics have to be heard to be believed.
The exterior is always accessible and free. Walk around the full perimeter to take in the geometry from every angle it looks different from each side.

Architecture & History
Designed by Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič and Barnabáš Kissling, construction began in 1967 and the building wasn’t completed until 1983 regular broadcasting only started in March 1985. It actually consists of two pyramids: the outer inverted shell and an inner pyramid housing broadcast equipment and recording studios. The total height, including the antenna, reaches 80 metres.
In 2018 it was officially declared a national architectural monument, and it holds the title of Building of the Century in Slovakia in the category of Social Structures. Ironically, architect Svetko was not invited to the opening ceremony due to his outspoken criticism of the communist regime.
Getting There
A 10-minute walk from the Old Town or a quick ride on trams 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9 to the Blumentál stop. Easy to combine with a stroll along the Danube embankment or a visit to the nearby Presidential Palace.
