Bratislava’s iconic “upside-down pyramid” and a landmark of modernist architecture. The Slovak Radio Building is one of Bratislava’s most striking architectural landmarks — a dramatic inverted pyramid rising above the city, celebrated as a bold example of 20th-century modernism and a symbol of the country’s broadcasting history.

A Monument of Slovak Modernism

Completed in 1983 and designed by Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič and Barnabáš Kissling, the building defies convention with its distinctive upside-down pyramidal shape.

Its steel structure, floating above open public space, makes it one of the most recognisable examples of socialist-era architecture in Europe.

Despite its unusual form, the building remains fully functional and continues to house the headquarters of Slovak Radio as well as one of the city’s major concert halls.

What to See & Experience

  • Iconic exterior: The inverted pyramid is especially photogenic in the golden hour and after dark when illuminated.

  • Large Concert Studio: A renowned venue with outstanding acoustics, hosting classical concerts, jazz evenings and recordings.

  • Architectural details: Brutalist materials, geometric steel framing and open public space beneath the structure.

  • Atmospheric surroundings: A quiet cultural quarter surrounded by trees, lawns and neighbouring cultural institutions.

💡 Fun fact: The New York Times once listed the Slovak Radio Building among the world’s “most peculiar buildings” — which only added to its cult status.

Our Tip
