The Schaubmar Mill in Pezinok

  • Museums
  • Galleries

Schaubmar Mill in Pezinok is the largest preserved stream (water-powered) mill in Europe and today forms part of the Slovak National Gallery. It is a rare example of a historic industrial building that has preserved its original milling technology while also transforming into a contemporary art space surrounded by nature.

The mill was originally built in 1767 by the Pálffy family on the Cajlanský stream. Later, in 1857, it was acquired by the Schaubmar family, after whom it is named. Their legacy remains strongly connected to the site to this day.

What makes Schaubmar Mill unique

Schaubmar Mill is the only preserved stream mill in Slovakia with fully functional milling technology. It combines a historic technical monument with a gallery dedicated mainly to modern and contemporary art and design.

The mill is exceptional because it preserves both:
authentic industrial heritage
active cultural and artistic programming

This makes it one of the most distinctive cultural spaces in the region.

The building

The complex consists of the main mill building with a residential part for the miller, as well as former agricultural and utility buildings such as barns, stables, storage spaces and workshops. Several of these structures still exist and have been adapted for new cultural uses.

In 1913, the original stone milling system was replaced with a more modern roller milling technology, significantly improving efficiency and working conditions.

After decades of decline in traditional milling, the mill ceased commercial operation in 1951. In 1972, it was acquired by the Slovak National Gallery, which helped preserve its technology and architecture.

What to expect

Visitors can explore a space where history, technology and contemporary art meet. The site offers:

exhibitions of modern and contemporary art
guided tours of the historic mill and technology
cultural events such as concerts, workshops and markets

The atmosphere combines rural surroundings with a strong cultural programme, making it a unique escape from the city.
