ZOO Bratislava
- Nature & Outdoor
- For Kids
Tucked into the forested foothills of the Little Carpathians, Bratislava Zoo spans 96 hectares and is one of the largest green spaces you can explore in the city. It is not just a place to see animals. The zoo focuses on breeding and rescue of endangered species, and a visit here puts you face to face with some of the rarest animals in the world.
What to expect
The zoo is home to an impressive roster of endangered species including the Ceylon leopard, Sumatran orangutan, Przewalski’s horse, Liberian hippopotamus and golden-cheeked gibbon, among many others. Recent additions include capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, arriving in late 2025 and visible in their outdoor enclosure from spring, and red pandas with their own enclosure connected to tree vegetation.

Key exhibits include a big cat pavilion for lions, jaguars and Ceylon leopards, a primate pavilion for chimpanzees and orangutans, a terrarium and exotarium with meerkats, sloths, armadillos and tropical monkeys, zebra and giraffe enclosures, natural lakes with flamingos and pelicans, forest enclosures for Carpathian fauna including European bison, red deer and wild boar, and the award-winning Eurasian wolf enclosure, which received the White Elephant prize for best new breeding facility in Czech and Slovak zoos in 2018.
The indoor giraffe area is open to visitors during winter when the animals are not outdoors (9:30–17:30). All indoor pavilions are open year-round from 9:30–17:30.
For families
The Gazdovský Dvor farmyard is a highlight for younger visitors, with ponies, miniature goats, sheep and chickens, plus a petting area where children can feed the animals. Plan for a full day. There is plenty of space to roam and the forest setting makes it a comfortable outing even in summer.
